Mutants And Masterminds Quickstart

Warhammer, Warhammer 40K and Warmachine are popular among wargamers at the moment. Among roleplayers, Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder are popular, but there are many other games being run - active games at the moment include Dark Heresy (a roleplaying game set in the Warhammer 40K universe), Shadowrun, Star Wars: Edge of Empire and HarnMaster. A couple of our members have even designed their own rules systems, which they use for their games.
Some games require little commitment – card games and board games are quick to set up and last a limited time – whereas others, like roleplaying games, can be more open-ended and a fair amount of preparation from the gamesmasters. But people playing card games may still require commitments if they want to meet regularly with the same group of people.

Many games use a variety of dice with a number of different sides (usually four-sided, six-sided, eight-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided and 20-sided). collectively known as polyhedral dice. These can be hard to find in the Gulf. One of our members is in the process of importing a large number of polyhedral sets, which he plans to sell on to GRC members at cost. Failing that, you can order from an online store or find a dice-roller app for your smartphone, tablet or computer.

It varies wildly. Some games are designed for just one session of an hour or two – that’s the kind of game we run at Comic Con and our other group events. Some games are intended to run for multiple sessions, each of several hours play. Your character (or army, for wargamers) might get better during that time – you level up.

As a community, none, but individual gamesmasters may have requirements for people joining their games. Most people looking to host games will tell you how often they intend to run them, on what days of the week, where, how long the individual session will run and roughly how long they intend the game to last (one session, several sessions, for an indefinite period, etc). If the gamesmaster doesn’t tell you this up front, ask them.

Some games are designed to be genre-specific - that is, there are fantasy games, superhero games, modern-day games, science-fiction games and more. Others are designed to work in any setting; these are known as generic or multi-genre systems. Generic systems usually have supplements expanding rules for a particular genre; GURPS is particularly renowned for this, and a number of people who don't play GURPS buy its sourcebooks as references for other rule systems - check out this list of GURPS sourcebooks .

Finally, there are a number of free games knocking around the interwebz. The entire Pathfinder rules are available on Paizo's Pathfinder SRD site . FUDGE is another popular free game, and is intended to work with any kind of setting - fantasy, science fiction, historical, superhero and more; links to download it are on its designer Steffan O'Sullivan's website .

We have an ad hoc steering committee. If you've been to one of our minicons or played with us at Comic Con you'll have met some or all of them. All the committee really does is try to organise events and make them cool. The committee is chosen, not elected; if we ever start asking you for money to be part of the GRC that may change.

We want to promote tabletop gaming in the Arabian Gulf. That includes roleplaying games, war games and the geekier end of card games and board games. Geekier end? Yeah, we’re not really about whist, bridge, hakem or poker, nor about Monopoly, backgammon or chess (though some of us enjoy those games too); but card games like Magic the Gathering, Munchkin and Fluxx, and boardgames like Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan and Kingmaker are right up our street. (I’m not listing example roleplaying or war games, because all of those are quite geeky enough to qualify.
And for games that do work better with them, you can make or buy paper counters or cardboard miniatures. Paizo make some excellent, sturdy cardboard fantasy miniatures, which they call pawns. These are sometimes in Kinokuniya. Arion Games make a series of low cost print-your-own miniatures which they sell through DriveThruRPG , and classic Steve Jackson Cardboard Heroes are available in PDF form on the company's e23 shop . A google search will come up with many free cardboard minis.
Games sometimes go out of print, particularly licensed tie-in games. You can often find second-hand games on ebay, and there are a number of specialist second-hand game shops with online portals. The three biggest are probably Noble Knight Games , Wayne's Books and The Dragon's Trove . If a game is considered collectible, expect to pay quite a bit for it even if you can find it ($50 to $100; mint copies of the original 1974 D&D rules go for $1000 or more).
